Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages leading to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
