A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country battling rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old presenter was approached by three suspects, one of whom began shooting at him before running away.

The motive behind the incident is unknown and no one has been arrested have taken place, police said.

Details of the Attack

Police revealed that Stock was attacked as he was departing from a building near the city center landmark.

He had devoted time at the site overseeing the implementation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by unknown people, as per local media.

"It is alleged the deceased was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," authorities said.

Security camera video reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what looked like a security uniform shooting on Stock before running away.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.

It was further revealed that Stock had an gun that was not fired and no items were stolen during the attack.

Important clues, like cartridges, were recovered from the location.

Call for Public Assistance

Officials are asking eyewitnesses who may have seen the suspects to assist with the investigation.

"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the shooting, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to determine their location," added an official.

A Nation in Mourning

His sister, a close relative, said the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.

"I am devastated. I don't have words," she said.
"We know he was a champion for numerous individuals. He spoke out bravely about topics not many people were prepared to speak about. This is a devastating blow."

She urged the community to not sharing graphic images from the incident, saying this was an extremely painful time, particularly for Stock's three sons.

Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that premiered on a South African broadcasting platform.

In addition to his media career, Stock was involved in various business ventures, including protective services, providing high-level security services and managing safety for prestigious gatherings across South Africa.

He was also said to be engaged in property management and was involved in building evictions.

His death has sent the nation reeling and triggered an wave of remembrances from his fans, the government and various organizations.

A cabinet official said he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's murder.

"He spoke his truth fearlessly and impartially. He even challenged me and my actions as a minister. He was a pure example of who we must aspire to be," was his tribute.

A party figurehead commented the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a shock for all South Africans".

A broadcasting director said that "DJ Warras was not merely a face of a reality series. He was a gifted communicator, a true devotee of sound and a kind-hearted individual who brought joy and energy to every moment on screen. His commitment to his craft left an lasting impression."

In a communication, the channel he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his magnetism, warmth and quick humor, adding that his memory "will live on".
