Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
