The Details Known Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
