The teenager has featured in seven matches for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes club history in a key European match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and gave him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, each day you go to train and each day you play a match," said Pitarch after his debut.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have belied his age and experience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He's extremely dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the option to represent either country at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. My situation is positive with Spain, but I'll make a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the two-one win at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team chase trophies to come.

After his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my playing time on the field," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
