Two Separate Cuba-Destined Humanitarian Sailboats Reported Lost after Setting Sail from Mexico.
A comprehensive search and recovery mission is presently under way in the Caribbean waters for a pair of unlocated boats transporting aid cargo traveling from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Initiated
Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval teams and military search aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying at least nine total personnel, as stated by a navy statement.
The ships had been expected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their docking, the navy said.
Background of Aid to Cuba
The island nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation struggles through multiple nationwide blackouts.
"The crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are outfitted with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," a representative for the convoy stated.
The nine-person crew are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their consular staff.
"The group is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.
Earlier Humanitarian Delivery
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had delivered 14 tonnes of donated goods to the nation.
That boat, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro landed in Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, drugs, baby formula, bicycles and foodstuffs.
Broader Geopolitical Context
Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led attempts to bring essential supplies to Cuba since January, when a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation began.
International organizations have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with over 50,000 surgeries called off in Cuba amid power shortages.
Diplomatic tensions have increased over the past months, with remarks from various officials underscoring the delicate nature of diplomatic ties.
Reacting to previous statements, a prominent Cuban official insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Reports suggest that initial phases of talks were initiated, although their present status remains unclear.
The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its reach to locate the boats and ensure the well-being of the sailors.
As of now, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
