UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a young woman containing several personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate souls, all possessing unique fears and drives. These entities can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on platforms.
