Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such treatments must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
