Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates surrounding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff are not listening by fan response, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.
“We have some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
